What is surgical abortion?
Surgical abortion, better known as vacuum aspiration (suction abortion), is a safe and effective transcervical method recommended by the World Health Organization in its publication on abortion guidelines.
Surgical abortion using vacuum aspiration is the method chosen by most women who decide to terminate their pregnancy, as it is 99% effective and faster than medical abortion; this takes between 15 and 20 minutes in the operating room and does not require hospitalization.
What does the vacuum aspiration procedure involve?
Vacuum aspiration is an abortion procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the contents of the uterus are suctioned out using a plastic cannula; mild intravenous sedation is generally used to prevent the patient from feeling discomfort or pain during the procedure.

What do I need to request a surgical abortion?
- To be completely healthy.
- Be less than 12 weeks pregnant.
- Not currently undergoing any medical treatment.
- Not having an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted
Instructions for Your Surgial Abortion Appointment at the Clinic
- You must fast completely (no food or liquids, including plain water) for 8 hours prior to your appointment.
- Please practice good personal hygiene.
- Please do not wear jewelry or piercings.
- Please wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
- If you are a minor, you must be accompanied by an adult with valid identification.
Note: If you do not arrive having fasted, we will not be able to perform the surgery that same day.
What happens on the day of my appointment?
On the day of your surgical abortion appointment, the gynecologist will check your health and perform an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy.
You will receive a detailed explanation of the surgical abortion procedure, as well as the aftercare instructions.
You will need to fill out and sign some forms, as well as the consent form for the procedure.
You will be assigned a room at the clinic where you can change and get ready for the procedure.
You will be taken to the operating room, where our specialists and nurses will assist you during the procedure, which will last approximately 15 minutes.
After the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area accompanied by a nurse.
They will take you to your room so you can finish recovering and collect your belongings.
Recovery After a Surgical Abortion
Recovery time after medical abortion It’s relatively short. At the clinic It usually takes less than 30 minutes, during which time you’ll be monitored. Once you’re home the next day, you can resume your normal activities, with the exception of:
- Do not carry heavy objects.
- Do not exercise.
- Do not go up or down stairs.
- Eat a bland diet.
After the aspiration procedure, you will likely experience some bleeding and cramping. For this reason, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re comfortable and take the rest of the day to rest. If you need them, have sanitary pads and a heating pad on hand for the cramps.
Be sure to have pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), on hand.
